NTCA Aims to Develop the Next Generation of Compensation Professionals

On March 22, the North Texas Compensation Association (NTCA) held its inaugural Compensation Career Exploration Program on the campus of the University of North Texas at Dallas. The event welcomed 48 college students and emerging human resources professionals from six separate universities, including Dallas Baptist University, Tarleton State University, Texas Woman’s University, University of Dallas, University of North Texas and UNT-Dallas.

The full-day event included seven professional development sessions on compensation practices and techniques, following the body of knowledge defined in the WorldatWork CCP credential. It also included a panel discussion on strategies for entering the compensation career path. In addition, attendees had an opportunity to meet with organizations from the North Texas region to learn about internships and job opportunities. The planning committee, led by Dr. Brian Martinson of Tarleton State University, NTCA’s college alliance chair, and including volunteers Dr. John Davis from Davis Consulting and Drs. Elizabeth Muniz, Frances Connor and John Hubbard from UNT-Dallas, developed the program with the support of the NTCA board of directors and in consultation with HR students at both TSU and UNT-Dallas. Support was also received from the membership of the NTCA as they volunteered to lead the sessions, serve on the career panel and meet with students to discuss employment opportunities.

Christopher DeClerk, director of total rewards for Morsco, kicked off the event with an overview of the total rewards approach to compensation. This was followed up by Allison Hoeinghaus and Taylor Archer of Alvarez & Marsal Taxand, LLC presenting on accounting and finance. Dr. Davis presented two sessions, one on quantitative principles and the other on salary survey analysis and market pricing. Janet Koechel of JFK Consulting covered the regulatory environment for compensation and Matt Sidhom, director of compensation and benefits with the PLH Group, covered variable and sales compensation. Chuck Leu, director of compensation and HRIS for The Michaels Companies, Inc. and NTCA president, presented on global compensation and served on the career panel along with Armetrice Johnson, compensation and HRIS at A.H. Belo Corp., and Marian Cartwright, senior compensation consultant in HR at Children’s Health.

The response from the students gave a strong indication that the program was a valuable experience for them and they would recommend it to their colleagues. A post-program survey with a 46% response rate yielded the following results:

  • 100% of the respondents learned something new about compensation, found the program to be a valuable learning experience and would recommend the event to their colleagues.
  • 95% said it was a valuable career development experience for them.
  • 90% indicated they made contact with a potential employer at the event.

Given the strong response from both the students and professional members, the NTCA plans to continue investing in the development of future compensation professionals through programs like the Compensation Career Exploration Program
