The Gift of Feedback

Editor’s Note: On June 25, Workspan Digital published “D&I Coach Acknowledges Privilege with Compassion,” a review of La’Wana Harris’ new book, Diversity Beyond Lip Service, on its “Rewarding Reads” blog. What follows is the author’s response to the review.

Thank you, Stephanie N. Rotondo! Your review reveals more than an insightful perspective on the words in my book. You’ve accurately expressed the sentiments of my heart as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

During the writing process, I was often torn between what I felt needed to be said, and my own limiting beliefs about what people were able to hear regarding power and privilege. I wondered what it would mean for my career and my reputation if I addressed these issues head on.

Your gift of feedback along with the many testimonials from people who find elements of their lived experience in the book assure me it was well worth the risk.

Thank you again for the support and shared passion!

Onward,

I’m wondering if there is an electronic copy of the Alicia Jenkins article, “Putting Your Mouth Where Your Money Is” (June/July 2019), that you can share with me. It was a very good article and I want to share it with a few of my colleagues. We’ve had many conversations around the necessity of having a clear, concise and strategically communicated compensation philosophy — would love to forward it along if you have it available.

Thanks!
